Dr. Isaac Cohensius (1910 – 1993) was a graduate of the medical school at Utrecht, The Netherlands when the Nazis took him to be a doctor in their forced labor camps. With little practical experience, insufficient medication, lack of essential medical equipment, and terrible sanitary conditions, he took care of the sick and wounded camp prisoners as well as the Nazi officers and their families. He wrote notes for a diary, which he hid from the Nazis in the sick room, where no one except him dared enter. He was able to save the notes till after the war when he combined their content into this documentary book.
After the war, he specialized in gynecology, in Silesia, Poland. Being a Zionist, he immigrated to Israel in 1948 and served as a medical doctor in the Israeli army. This was the ultimate contrast to being a humiliated prisoner-doctor in the German camps, and the highlight of his life. Later, he was a gynecologist in the maternity ward at Galilee Medical Center before he retired to his home by the Mediterranean Sea. He had a loving wife, two children, and seven grandchildren.
