Yehudit Harel

יהודית הראל

Yehudit Harel was born in 1931 in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia (now part of Ukraine). In 1944, Yehudit was sent with her mother, father, and other family members to Auschwitz. After Yehudit and her mother were liberated from the camp, Yehudit went to Budapest, joined the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement, and prepared with them to immigrate to Israel. There she also met her future husband, Menachem Harel. On the way to Israel in 1948, they were arrested by the British and sent to a detention camp in Cyprus for six months. Finally, Yehudit arrived with a group to Kibbutz Negba at the age of 17. Shortly after their arrival, the War of Independence broke out, and Yehudit took part in defending the kibbutz. After the war, she married Menachem and they had three children: Orna, who suffered from a mental illness from the age of 17; Zeevi; and Sigal, who was born with Down syndrome. At the request of her grandchildren, Yehudit began writing this book. In January 2024, she finished working on her book, and in February, Yehudit passed away after suffering from pancreatic cancer.
