אברהם "יאיר" שטרן ז"ל
Avraham “Yair” Stern was a soldier and a poet. Born in Poland in 1907, he followed his heart to Jerusalem, where he studied the Classics and graduated with distinction.
A passionate and proactive young man whose dream was to see the Jewish State of Israel become a reality, Stern was quick to join the Zionist resistance group active in Israel at the time, the “Irgun Zvai Leumi” (National Military Organization – also known as Etzel or the Irgun). Later, in 1940, Stern left the Irgun, taking a small but loyal following with him and establishing the “Lehi” – Fighters for the Freedom of Israel – which, under his leadership, would go on to become one of the most influential military resistance groups of the time.
Stern was murdered in a south Tel Aviv hideout by British police in 1942, despite his being bound and unarmed. He was 34 years old.
His legacy lives on in the work of his beloved Lehi and in the poems he wrote describing his deep love for his people and land.
